A Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is expected to deliver technical leadership and management within the company. Being a CTO involves overseeing the overall technological resources, needs, and capacities of the organization. 

As part of the executive team, a CTO examines the company's temporary and long-term technical needs and allocates the capital to make improvements to its technological infrastructures.

The role as a CTO heavily relies on strategic thinking and sound decision-making. Ideal candidates must also possess the following skills:

  • Excellent hiring practices to assemble the right and productive technological team
  • Management and Organizational Skills
  • Interpersonal and diplomacy skills in discussing and negotiating with various stakeholders
  • Perceptiveness and ability to predict technological trends

Chief Technology Officer: Responsibilities

Typical duties of a CTO generally include:

  • Proposing and implementing all executive decisions related to the technical matters of the company
  • Collaborate with technological team in maintaining computer systems, technological assets, and company networks
  • Protecting company's data security and management
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of existing technological components and operations
  • Recommending actions and policies to improve technological operations and productivity 
  • Conducting activities for the research and development of the company's technologies

Chief Technology Officer: Requirements

  • Master's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Management, or other related courses
  • At least five years of relevant experience in technological work/roles
  • At least five years of proven experience in managerial positions
  • Advanced technological know-how and skillset
